Structural Ânima: measuring a kind of risk that does not show up in the price

◦ Index methodology v2.2 (working papers with DOI). See the methodology.

Science

The closing price is the most photographed piece of information in the market — and one of the most incomplete. Two sessions can end at the same level having come from different worlds: one in which the whole market crossed the day without conviction, another in which optimism and fear fought a battle the final number does not record. The quote says where the day ended; it does not say in what state it ended. And it is in that state — not in the level — that a kind of fragility lives, one the historical episodes know well: markets that break coming out of apparent calm, and markets that cross storms without breaking.

The Structural Ânima Index is the house's instrument for measuring that state: the background mood of the Brazilian market, in its slow layer — the one that moves in months, not in sessions. The instrument's concept, sources and limits are declared in a public working paper with a permanent DOI: The Structural Ânima Index, currently at version 2.3. What the index aims to capture is the structural condition of sentiment — the terrain over which prices move, not their movement.

Why "structural"

The word does heavy lifting in the name. Market sentiment has layers with different speeds: a surface that reacts to every headline and dissipates in days, and a substrate that forms slowly, accumulated over months of collective experience — and that conditions how the headlines will be received. The same news lands on different soils: on a depressed substrate, the good number is met with distrust; on a euphoric substrate, the bad number is forgiven. Anyone who has followed the market through a few cycles recognizes the phenomenon; the difficulty was always to measure it rather than intuit it.

That slow layer is what Structural Ânima targets. The distinction is not decorative: the two layers tell different stories and frequently disagree — an agitated surface over a stable background, or superficial calm over a deteriorating one. The Ânima family has one instrument for each layer, and the difference between the two is the subject of its own article later in this trail.

What it means to say this risk "does not show up in the price"

It means something precise: the state of structural mood is not derivable from the level of prices at a given moment. Two moments with similar valuations can carry opposite substrates — and the developments history records from each tend to differ, not because sentiment predicts the future, but because it describes the condition of the present with information the price alone does not contain. The house's archive holds episodes in which that divergence between level and state was the most useful information available — not as prophecy, as context.

The paper also declares what the index is not, and that list matters as much as the other: it is not a buy or sell signal, it is not a return forecast, it does not promise to anticipate turning points. It is a thermometer of condition — and thermometers inform the decision of whoever reads them; they do not make it.

What is public, and why

Structural Ânima follows the same transparency contract as the rest of the collection, discussed in the previous article of this trail: concept, sources and limits in a public document, dated and immutable in the repository — the calculation mechanics, reserved. The DOI performs here the function it performs across the series, as Track 1 explains in what Zenodo is: preventing the index's definition from being rewritten after the facts. A sentiment index is particularly vulnerable to that temptation — "sentiment" is an elastic word, and retroactive elasticity is the vice that versioning freezes. What Ânima claimed to measure in its original version is preserved; what version 2.3 revised is recorded on top, with a date. The daily reading, published in the Diário, exposes the instrument to continuous accountability against that contract.

The index's public conceptual page predates the deposit — the working paper formalizes it, with the advantage only permanent registration provides: no one has to trust the house's memory about what the index always was.

What the reader can do with this

For the research reader, Structural Ânima is a case study of a general problem: how to turn a qualitative concept — "background mood" — into a disciplined series, with a frozen definition and an auditable history. For the Diário reader, it is the character responsible for the slow layer of sentiment in the daily readings. For both, the contract is the same: what the index measures is written and dated; what it does not promise, likewise.

Frequently asked questions

Does Structural Ânima measure optimism and pessimism?

It measures the background state of sentiment, of which optimism and pessimism are the extreme regions — with the caveat that the instrument's interest lies less in the day's label and more in the accumulated condition: how consolidated the mood is, in which direction, for how long.

Isn't a sentiment index subjective by nature?

The object is subjective; the measurement need not be. The discipline comes from the public contract: declared sources, definition frozen per version, series exposed daily. Subjectivity without a contract is opinion; with a contract, it is a measurable construct — like many others economics measures.

What changed between the original version and 2.3?

The repository preserves every version, and the revisions are documented in the texts themselves — that trail of dated changes is part of the method. The honest summary: the central concept remained; the document matured around it.

Does the index anticipate crises?

No, and the paper makes no such claim. It describes the structural condition of sentiment in the present. The historical usefulness of that description — as context, never as prophecy — is verifiable in the house's archive, episode by episode.
