What ORCID is and why independent researchers need it

Brazilian science has a surname problem. Search for "Silva, L." in any article database and the query returns a crowd: engineers, physicians, economists, all signing alike, some with output that blends into their namesakes'. The problem is not authorial vanity — it is infrastructure. A system that records millions of works needs to know, unambiguously, which person wrote what. Names cannot do it; numbers can.
ORCID is a persistent 16-digit digital identifier that distinguishes one researcher from all others, namesakes included, and follows them through an entire career — across institutions, countries and name changes. Registration is free, controlled by the researcher, and maintained by ORCID Inc., a non-profit organization funded by the institutions that join the system.
What problem does ORCID solve?
The same one the DOI solves for works — but on the people side. A DOI says "this is the study, forever, even if the website changes address"; an ORCID says "this is the author, forever, even if the name appears as L. Silva in one paper, Luiz F. N. Silva in another and Silva, L.F. in a third." The two identifiers were designed to work together: when a paper with a DOI is deposited along with the author's ORCID, the link between person and work becomes a machine record, not a search inference.
In practice, the identifier shows up in three places. In journal submission systems, which ask for it at registration — many now require it. In repositories: whoever deposits a work on Zenodo, for instance, finds the ORCID field in the deposit form itself, next to each author's name. And in the agencies and databases that sync output automatically, sparing the researcher from typing the same résumé into five systems.
Where the identifier came from
ORCID was born in October 2012, out of a consortium of publishers, universities and funding agencies facing the same bottleneck from different angles: correctly attributing millions of works to their authors. The format was designed for machines before people — sixteen digits in four blocks, the last character being a check digit that may be an X, in the standard of international name identifiers. The technical detail matters for a practical reason: a typo in an ORCID is detectable by the system itself, which is not true of a misspelled surname. Since then, the identifier has become a standard piece of the metadata circulating among publishers, repositories and funders — when a new DOI is registered with the authors' ORCIDs, the information propagates on its own through the systems that consume it.
The case of the researcher without an institution
For the university researcher, ORCID is a convenience. For the independent researcher, it is something else: the substitute for the institution as an anchor of identity.
Whoever researches inside a university inherits its presentation — the institutional email, the department page, the affiliation in the paper's header. Whoever researches outside has none of that, and every published work risks looking adrift in the world, with no thread tying it to the previous ones. ORCID is that thread. A profile listing works with their DOIs, stable for years, tells a story no header tells: that of a continuous, verifiable output by the same person.
This house's experience illustrates the point from within. Radar Perene's working paper series is deposited on Zenodo — six studies published with DOIs, from the risk index (10.5281/zenodo.21325743) to the macro regime score (10.5281/zenodo.21402939). In numbers: each of the six deposits goes through the same form in which Zenodo asks, for every author, the ORCID identifier — and it is that link, repeated at every deposit, that makes the six appear as the work of one and the same author to any system reading the metadata. With no university affiliation in the header, the ORCID + DOI pair is the entire credential: it identifies the person, identifies the work, and lets the reader check both.
What ORCID is not
It is not an evaluative résumé: it measures no quality, gives no grade, ranks nobody. It is not an academic social network, although profiles are public. And it does not replace the Lattes platform in the Brazilian ecosystem — Lattes is the national curriculum, detailed and narrative; ORCID is the international identifier, minimal and machine-readable. The two coexist, and Lattes itself allows linking an ORCID to the curriculum.

How much does an ORCID cost?
Nothing. Individual registration is free at orcid.org; the system's upkeep is paid by member institutions.
Are ORCID and DOI the same thing?
No. A DOI identifies a work; an ORCID identifies a person. A paper has one DOI and may have several authors, each with their own ORCID.
Can a researcher without a university affiliation get an ORCID?
Yes — registration requires no affiliation. For the independent researcher, that is precisely when the identifier works hardest.
Does ORCID replace the Lattes curriculum?
No. They are different instruments: Lattes is the standard curriculum of the Brazilian system; ORCID is the international identifier connecting author and work in metadata. Using both together is the common arrangement.
