The extreme

The appetite gauge held firm — and yet Brazilian money refused to buy the economy. It bought rent. The ratio between real estate funds and the broad index made the most violent jump it would record in the entire period: from a nearly neutral deviation to well above the historical average, the single largest move of the month. There was appetite — it just had an address. In numbers: the Perene Risk Index from 74.4 to 86.4, locking in risk_on; the IFIX/IBOV ratio from a z of 0.30 to 2.85, an advance of 2.54 deviations; and, against the current, the intermarket structure easing from 31.56 to 27.71, in strong risk reduction.

What happened next

The address held — and the surface caved in. In July, three months later, real estate funds returned to the top (IFIX/IBOV from 0.72 to 2.33), but the appetite gauge that April had shown firm collapsed: the Perene Risk Index fell from 73.4 to 14.8, the first risk_off of the period. In October, domestic appetite resurfaced (50.7 to 79.0) while the structure sank again and commodities lost the post they had been holding. And a year later, in April 2012, rent reappeared as the favored shelter (IFIX/IBOV from 0.19 to 1.55): the refuge had changed address, but it was still rent.

What did not happen

April's firm appetite was not broad risk. Anyone who read the Perene Risk Index at 86.4 as a green light for the cyclical economy got the address wrong — cyclicals deepened their lag (Cyclical/Non-Cyclical from -0.40 to -0.83) and the internal structure was drawing defense. And the surface optimism did not survive the quarter: in July the same gauge would shed 58 points. The buying was real; it just wasn't what it seemed.

The honest verdict

The Radar got it right that there was appetite, and got the address right — contracted income, not cycle. But it recorded the disagreement between the two gauges without resolving it: the aggregate said risk_on, the composition said shelter. Which one was reading the true temperature? July answered. The structure was the more honest reader — only the confirmation took months, not days.
