Capital before confidence: when flow came back and mood lagged behind (2018)

Derivative

The extreme

In June 2018, right after the shock of the strike, the Radar recorded a rare divergence between the two sides of the same portrait. Capital, measured from inside the market, retraced almost all the lost ground at once: the Perene Risk Index jumped from withdrawal to the extreme of appetite, from 14.6 to 93.6. But investor mood barely coughed — the Ânima Index went from 11.2 to 13.2, still pinned to the floor of the scale. The money came back; confidence stayed behind.

What happened next

The distance between the two axes lasted months. Appetite held firm, but mood refused to climb aboard through July. Only in September did sentiment finally acknowledge what flow had already been saying: Ânima jumped from 11.5 to 54.6, the first close above neutral in the recent series. It took roughly three months from money returning to the table to faith catching up to it — not euphoria, just the absence of fear meeting what capital had anticipated.

What didn't happen

Mood did not confirm flow right away — and that delay is the point. Anyone treating June's leap in appetite as a sign that sentiment would follow close behind, and waiting for confidence to show up before believing in the turn, would have missed the entire re-entry of capital. The money did not wait for faith; faith is what chased it, months late.

Honest verdict

In 2018, flow led mood by about three months. The lesson is not that capital is always right — it's that capital moves by mechanics and mood by conviction, which takes longer to form. Reading appetite in isolation is hearing only half the portrait.
